Hospice is a philosophy of care. It treats the patient rather than the disease and focuses on quality of life. It surrounds the patient and family with a team consisting of professionals who not only address physical distress, but emotional and spiritual distress, as well.
Hospice care is designated for patients with a limited life expectancy (less than 6 months). It is a benefit for patients who choose comfort, relief from pain and who would like to avoid more intrusive life-sustaining measures or curative treatments.
